Get the Skinny on Tie Rod Ends in Your Hyundai

When you drive, you want to make sure it's a smooth ride, and with a Hyundai, you're going to get it, but, smooth rides come from many vehicle components, and tie rod ends are just one part that keeps your vehicle moving. So, what are they and how do they function, and when do you know they need to be replaced? We've got the answers at Gene Messer Hyundai!

What is a tie rod end?

  • A tie rod end is part of the steering components in your vehicle, with an inner and outer end
  • It transmits force from the steering center link or rack gear to the steering knuckle, which causes the vehicle to turn
  • The outer tie rod end connects with an adjusting sleeve, which allows its length to be adjustable, and that adjustment is used to set a vehicle's alignment angle
  • A tie rod end essentially helps keep your vehicle straight when you're driving and turning, as it permits your vehicle to steer

When does my tie rod end need repair?

  • If your front end alignment is off, you might need to have your tie rod ends and other components checked, as worn down tie rods can cause the vehicle to fall out of alignment. You'll know if the vehicle drifts left or right when it is pointed straight, or pulling in one direction
  • If your steering wheel shakes or feels lose, there's a chance that a tie rod end could be wearing out, and begin to vibrate. Be sure to also have your suspension checked, as well
  • If you see uneven or excessive tire wear, that could be because a tie rod end is worn on one side, causing the tire to wear more than others
